Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Definition: Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small mask to help patients relax during dental treatment while staying awake.
Why it matters
For anxious children and adults, nitrous oxide can make a visit calmer, and its effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed. Your dentist reviews health history first to decide whether it is a good fit.
