Gum Health term

Periodontal Disease

Definition: Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is an infection and inflammation of the gums and the bone that support the teeth, ranging from gingivitis to periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss.

Why it matters

Early gum disease often causes no pain, so bleeding gums when brushing may be the only sign. Regular cleanings and exams catch it while it can still be reversed or controlled.
