Definition: Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that lightens the natural color of teeth, usually with peroxide-based bleaching agents applied in the dental office or with custom trays at home.

Why it matters

Whitening works on natural enamel but does not change the color of crowns, fillings or veneers, and some people get temporary sensitivity. A dental exam first rules out decay or gum problems that should be treated before whitening.
