Preventive term
Topical Fluoride
Definition: Topical fluoride is fluoride applied directly to the teeth, as a varnish, gel or foam at the dental office or in toothpaste at home, to strengthen enamel and help prevent tooth decay.
Why it matters
Fluoride helps rebuild weakened enamel before a cavity forms. Families have different views on fluoride, so it is worth discussing the options, the amount used for young children and alternatives with your dentist.
